The Newport Town Council voted unanimously Wednesday, April 15, during a public meeting at Town Hall to appoint Brenda Harris as the next mayor of the Town of Newport, filling the vacancy created by Mayor Dennis Barber’s retirement.

Harris will assume the role following Barber’s resignation after more than twelve years serving as mayor. In accordance with North Carolina law governing municipal vacancies, she will serve as mayor until the next municipal election in November 2027.

Harris, who was elected to the Newport Town Council in 2023, brings decades of professional leadership, community involvement and local perspective to the position as she steps into the town’s highest office.

“It is an honor to be chosen to fill this position,” Harris said. “It’s bittersweet that it’s in Dennis’ absence, but I’m excited to answer the call. Newport is ready to go — I’m excited for what the future holds."

Harris attended Newport Elementary School and graduated from West Carteret High School in 1974 before beginning her college education at UNC-Greensboro. She later returned to school while working full-time, earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with honors.

Professionally, Harris spent 37 years at Fleet Readiness Center East aboard Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, where she held numerous leadership roles throughout her career and ultimately retired as Public-Private Partnership Depot Manager. Among her most notable accomplishments was helping establish the multimillion-dollar partnership between the depot and Lockheed Martin supporting the F-35 Aircraft Modification Program.

Though her career presented opportunities to relocate, Harris remained committed to Newport, where she and her husband, Tom, raised their three sons and remained active in the community. Following her retirement from federal service, Harris continued serving the community through substitute teaching, volunteer work and active involvement in Newport Community Baptist Church.

“I think Brenda is an exciting choice for Mayor of Newport,” Mayor Pro Tem Mark Eadie, Sr. said. “She has a lot of leadership experience in her professional realm, and now that she's retired, she has the ability to commit herself wholly to the people of Newport. She will be an advocate for every citizen in Newport.”

Town Manager Michele Querry said Harris’ appointment ensures continued leadership and stability as the town moves through its transition.

“We are pleased to welcome Mayor Brenda Harris into her new role and look forward to working closely with her as we continue serving the residents of Newport,” Querry said. “Her commitment to the community will be invaluable as we build on the strong foundation established during Mayor Dennis Barber’s tenure. Together, we will focus on providing services, supporting growth, and ensuring the Town continues to thrive during this transition.”

Harris’ council seat will remain vacant until such time as the Town Council chooses to appoint a replacement.
