The Town of Newport, NC (a growing, coastal community with a population of 4,500),  is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Fire/ EMS Chief.  The Town of Newport is the gateway to Carteret County and the Crystal Coast. The Town is proactively preparing for anticipated growth from the development of the US 70 (the future I-42 corridor) and defense-related facilities.

 

The Fire/EMS Chief, who is hired by and reports to the Town Manager, will lead the dedicated staff of the Town’s Fire/EMS Department as they continue to provide high quality public safety services to the community. 

 

The Town of Newport Fire/EMS Department has a total budget of $2.15 million and has 15 FTEs. The department also provides service to a county fire district on a contract basis. The department’s goal is to protect the lives, property, and environment of all people in the Newport community by preventing the occurrence and minimizing the adverse effects of fires, accidents, and all other emergencies.

The department provides paramedic-level EMS service and operates under a 48/96 shift schedule. It covers seventy-five square miles of response area composed of rural and suburban districts. Shift personnel cross-staff fire apparatus and ALS transport units with a steadily increasing call volume, answering over 2,400 calls for service in 2022.

Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Science, Emergency Services, Public Administration, or a related field preferred; supplemented by seven years of progressively responsible experience in fire suppression, prevention, EMS, and administrative work at the rank of Battalion Chief, Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief or Fire/EMS Chief; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. 

Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license. May be required to obtain and maintain additional certifications and licensures, as deemed necessary.

Finance Specialist

The Town of Newport is seeking a full-time Finance Specialist  who is able to perform difficult paraprofessional accounting functions for the finance operations in the Town.

An employee in this class is responsible for a variety of paraprofessional accounting tasks including handling accounts payable, payroll, accounts receivable, and performing related fiscal duties. Work includes creating a variety of payroll reports and paying payroll vendors, assisting with budgetary line item tracking, preparation of various records and reports, dealing with the public on a variety of financial issues, backing up other staff, and related accounting duties. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated through observation, conferences, review of work, and audit of the records by an external auditor.

 

An employee in this position processes accounts payable and checks for paying bills and invoices; enters approved invoices into the fiscal data base; generates and distributes checks; maintains accounts payable records and files; establishes and maintains vendor files; communicates with vendors on invoices and payments; obtains W-9s and issues 1099s; issues purchase orders to departments.

Monitors department line items and notifies departments when funds are insufficient for encumbrances.

Processes time sheets; reconciles and enters time into payroll data base in time categories; enters bi-weekly and monthly payroll; prints check advice and distributes to employees; prepares and distributes a variety of taxes and benefits reports; runs and reviews edit lists and makes changes and adjustments as needed; uploads file to bank for direct deposit.

Prepares various and miscellaneous invoices; processes accounts receivable and enters into the data base; assists customers who are making payments; receives and verifies reports and deposits for various payments, taxes, etc.; resolves discrepancies.

Troubleshoots and corrects financial software issues; arranges for technical assistance from the technology vendor when needed; participates in evaluation of new software.

Places surplus property on GovDeaIs.

Provides assistance and back up as needed; assists with annual audit as needed.

 

Desirable Education and Experience:  Graduation from a two-year college with an Associate's degree in accounting and experience in an automated fiscal accounting environment, preferably in the public sector; or an equivalent combination of education or experience.

 

Starting salary is dependent on education, skills and experience. Paramedic/Firefighter Trainee or Firefighter Paramedic

The Town of Newport Fire Department , "The 43 House" is currently accepting applications for one full-time Paramedic/Firefighter Trainee or FF/Paramedics. Successful candidate will work a 48/96 shift schedule. Our department covers seventy-five square miles of response area composed of rural and suburban districts. Shift personnel cross-staff fire apparatus and ALS transport units with a steadily increasing call volume, answering over 2400 calls for service in 2022.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent

Valid NC Driver’s License

NCOEMS Paramedic

ACLS, PALS, BCLS, PHTLS

Recommended Certifications:

NC Firefighter I & II

Applicants must be physically capable of carrying out the duties associated with EMS and training as a NC Firefighter. Successful candidate will be required to pass boarding with the Carteret County Medical Director, prior to the first assigned shift day.

 

Starting salary: $46,180. to $54,977. DOE before overtime.  Up to 5% increase after  successful completion of probationary period. We also offer paid health benefits for the employee, holiday pay, competitive sick  and new vacation accrual rates.

Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator

The Town of Newport is seeking a Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator that is a proactive individual with the ability to function as part of a team and independently under general supervision. Operates the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plant; makes adjustments to the equipment to maintain proper water quality, water flow, and volume; performs basic preventive maintenance to pumps, chemical feeders pumps and related equipment; performs water sampling and maintains daily records and reports of work performed and any other assigned tasks.

 

Applicant should have the ability to perform demanding physical tasks and work in all types of weather conditions. Hours are Monday- Friday 8AM to 5PM but must be able to work nights and holidays if called in for emergency repairs or disaster response. Position requires rotating weekend duty and after-hours on-call duty once training on the system is complete.

 

 

Minimum Requirements: High School Diploma or GED.  Valid North Carolina Driver's License (Class B CDL with Tanker within 90 days of employment). Minimum requirements include NC C-Well and NC Grade 2 Wastewater Certification.   May consider training the right candidate.
